For some reason, there still seems to be an idea of the 'evil penis' in art.  We live in such an open minded time, but some reason reason the idea that it is acceptable to photograph the female form nude, yet it is crude or disgusting to photograph the naked male body.  Every body is beautiful in its own way, so here are a selection of some of the incredible male nudes I have found on deviantart.

I don't care if this is nearly 2 years late but I want to comment damn it.

To sum it up, its the male gaze. Those that are too occupied with finding something erotic with the female nude will gladly toss male nudes to the side simply because they don't find it enticing enough for THEM. They don't care about equal representation in art but rather what pleases them, thus we get a lot of homophobic views on the male form from people who find it shameful that men would want to pose nude and show their bodies. And its not just guys making lewd comments towards male nudes as women do it too and can be even more nasty about it, going on some sort of moral banner about how seeing a male nude is wrong without any reason as to WHY in the first place.

I would love to see more male nudes as I feel that men are very underrepresented in art and anatomy classes. For the most part, the only thing we're going to see are simply naked women which leaves many people unable to draw or study off the male figure. A good example would be two anatomy books I studied from a week ago. the entire thing was full of FEMALE nudes and when I was desperately looking for a male figure, I could not find one. What is the point of art if we are not free to love the bodies of both women and men, of all sizes and details?

would you prefer the WOMEN, like myself stare for hours at the female body? No thank you! If I wanted to do that I'd just go stare at myself in the mirror.

Good discussion...

I had a discussion the other day with someone regarding a nude that depicted an ejaculation - is it possible for it to be looked at as an artistic nude (as was the intention) or will the fact that there is ejaculate automatically cause it to be viewed as pornographic? I was thinking about this as I scanned the dozens if not hundreds of images on DA that feature bloodletting, but couldn't find a one that depicted an ejaculation in an artistic way (or any way, for that matter).

I'm not surprised you're inability to locate on dA any picture depicting ejaculate, it's expressly forbidden by the policies here.

As is any image depicting an erection, for that matter.

See the following:

FAQ #565: You prohibit the submission of 'pornographic imagery'; what do you consider this to be?

__________

I am in complete agreement with the opinion expressed by the article's author. I am troubled by the pervasive notion that the nude male is vulgar or distasteful.

Thank you for your comments on the issue.

Hopefully, someday, such an article wont be necessary.

Until then, let us all keep doing what we do and not accept being told what qualifies as art!

Thanks.

It is interesting to me that in a feature apparently designed to defend the penis' place in art, only one-third of the features pieces clearly display male genitalia.

I support the cause, as applies within dA's guidelines on the subject, and the pieces chosen are each beautiful. It just seems odd.

In complete agreement! I am all for helping make male nudity just as acceptable in the art genre as the female. Have compiled a few recent projects based on this very concept! Thank you for this article.

Ok, most of the pictures of male nudes that I have seen on DA are "self-taken". Some are really professional (something I wish to achieve) and most of them are very poor but there's always time to improve skills.
Personally I don't enjoy looking at a male body, but boredom and the opportunity made me start taking pictures of myself outdoors and in the nude.
Now I belong to the group that I disliked.
Male nude models are thought of as homosexuals... There's another REALLY GREAT MISTAKE or misconception! Although the great majority (99%) of the people that watch or fave my pictures are men... But that doesn't mean they intent to have sex with men. I prefer to think that they like the pictures, the colors, the theme, the shadows... the work.
The question here is the relation with ART and the male body.
I prefer a thousand times more a woman's body to a man's body. And someday I hope I will take pictures of women as a job. In the meantime I'm using the only model I have, myself.

The male body is a work of art jus as much as a female and some people don't understand Artistic nudes actually most people don't.

Regardless everyone is beautiful to those who can see the beauty.

Because they don't see it as artistic but instead something they can get off on. Why do you think when someone puts up a TASTEFUL pic of a male form, someone will shout GAY? Because they can't get off on it and thus, it is ugly. Its sad that people think like this because its really hurting a lot of artist.

While looking at photos of nude men isn't really my thing, I think that they should have the same chance to be displayed as the photos of nude women.

This also reminds me of another double standard. Here, it's okay to photograph genitalia, but it's not okay to draw it.

You make a great point. It is true that the male form is overlooked in terms of artistic value. Admittedly, and perhaps coming from my male standpoint, I do feel it is sometimes justified. But that takes an almost philosophical/metaphorical (for lack of a better term) path.

That said, however, you have found some great images that represent the male form in very artistic, even beautiful, ways. Very strong arguments for de-vilifying the penis.

I'm a bit late to the discussion I admit, but I was wondering what your take is on erections in photos? I personally have no problem with seeing erections, provided it is done artistically, and not crudely (like the trash you find at Flickr). Surely an erect penis is more attractive than a wrinkly little pink thing? It would be nice if dA allowed erections in the artisitic nude category, but that is hardly likely with the current air of censorship around the place.

The thing with an erection is that it shows obvious sexual excitement and connotations, and as this is a site accessible by any age then DA can't run the risk of someone young coming across an image like that. In the UK, an erect penis cannot be show in newspapers or magazines because of its sexual implications.

It seems daft... when you can wander through the fetish gallery and see all manner of things. It is more implied there I suppose. Oh well, rules is rules.

i have no problem as well, i agree with you that if an erection is part of an artistic shot (not a porn one) it can be very sensual and alluring. i also agree on the trash you see on flickr! I've seen quite a lot of good and very bad shots (which weren't censored) of erections on DA.

Its obviously a very difficult line to draw between art and porn. As a dabbler in erection shots, I find the policy a little unfair too. All manner of pictures of women in all sorts of poses can be posted here without complaint, yet one erect penis brings the roof down. I have to ask... why? Just because it's a state of arousal? How do we know how many women in deviations might be aroused or not? It's discriminatory in my book. Art is meant to provoke an emotional reaction in the viewer.

Yet, on the other hand, I support the need to enforce some level of standards too. For me, the ideal would be to allow erections in general, but with a "no trash" policy enforced by a moderator, someone entrusted with the decision whether there's any artistic quality in a shot.

Plain and simple it's because women find it offensive because our society says that it's "hostile" and men find it offensive because if they admit that it's not then they fear that might mean they are gay.

I think it's sad and annoying that our society worships the female form, and the male form is ugly and dirty and offensive.

I've seen plenty of pictures of nude women in poses that seem absolutely pornographic (I mean I could find actually porn sites with women in those poses) and they are ok and filled with comments that do nothing but praise the model and artist no matter how crappy the photo is (and believe me some are really really horribly lit, even worse than actual porn). However any male nude photo will always have at least a dozen people commenting that it's ugly or silly or gross.
